My Extravaganza Experience
By Hannah Bakker
It was a long process but definitely worth it. First I went to the Jane’s Wool and Fabric shop and picked out my pattern. When I got home I cut out the pattern.
My next step was to pick out the fabric. I liked blue and pink but I just had to go for the red and black polka dot fabric. I also bought a red zip to match.
I cut out my material according to the pattern and sewed a little bit every night. Section by section I could see my dress coming together. When I started doing the ruffle’s, I made a few mistakes but my teacher helped me sort it all out.
When my dress was complete I had to add some finishing touches to make it look great. I sewed on some black ribbon just above the hips. At the back it had little flicks and a dainty rose.
The next task was to sort out accessories. I found a black headband with a flower on top, a black and silver necklace and skin coloured stockings. I also found a simple silver bangle, silver earrings and cute bow high heels to match.
After I was made up with make up and had my hair done, put on stage and had a planned routine I was ready to model my awesome dress. It felt great to be on stage and show everyone what I’d made and what I could do. And I was so proud of myself when I found out I had come 1st place!
I completely loved the experience. I had to have concentration, self believe and courage to get through but it was all worth it.
Wearable Arts!
Hi I’m Lauraliese and I have created a garment in the wearable art catergory for the Wearable Arts-Fashionista Extravaganza at Whakatane Intermediate School.
Our theme was recycled materials.
Materials that I used to create my garment were:
I made a garment out of recycled and old magazines. The base of my top was an already-made black dress, I attached strips of recycled magazines on sideways.
I had then finished my top and was on to my skirt. I had wire and a cardboard base. The cardboard was tied to the wire with string. I then had cut out colourful pages of magazines and things that I liked. I stuck them on to the base. I also had made fans out of magazines and had them glued around the top of my skirt. The bottom was covered in things that I liked.
The last step was sticking black material around the inside of my skirt so the wire wouldn’t rub on the back of my legs. I wore black tights underneath my dress. Nylon was tied to the top of my skirt and brought over my shoulder and twisted around my straps then brought down the opposite side of my shoulder and tied to my skirt. I also had a headband that had fans glued onto a headband.
I enjoyed it and it was so much fun!
Next time there is an Extravaganza I encourage you to join in!
