Student Council

Whakatane Intermediate School Council

Rationale: ‘School is fundamentally about people, relationships and personal growth.’

It is about equipping people intellectually, emotionally and physically.’

We as a school, work towards giving one child per class each year, the opportunity to become a School Councillor with the purpose of enabling students to have some say in the management of the school environment. Councilors are elected by their class teacher, and peers.

Student leadership is about setting an example to other students in leading through inspiration, positive attitudes, opportunity and perseverance.

Some of the duties that councilors are expected to undertake are:

  • Morning and Formal assembly duties
  • Speaking opportunities when visiting other schools and introducing and thanking guests.
  • Bringing request from students in their classrooms to school management, B.O.T. attention.
  • School playground duty on occasions with support from staff.
  • Organizing school Mufti Days and fund raising either for outside charities or for school equipment etc.
  • The Council meets weekly
  • Students are taking through the meeting process and a leadership course.
